EU Imposes Sanctions on Israeli Settlers and Hamas Leaders
The European Union has agreed to new sanctions targeting Israeli settlers in the West Bank and Hamas leaders. This move ends months of blockages by Hungary and draws criticism from Israeli and Hamas officials. The EU aims to address increasing settler violence in the region.
The European Union foreign ministers agreed on Monday to impose sanctions on violent Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, along with key figures from Hamas, as stated by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.
The newly approved sanctions target three individual settlers and four settler organizations, whose names remain undisclosed. This decision was previously stalled by Hungary's former government but has now been greenlit following a recent election. EU countries have expressed rising concerns over the escalation of settler violence targeting Palestinians in the West Bank.
Kallas commented on the long-delayed decision by stating, "It was high time we move from deadlock to delivery." Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar condemned the EU's decision, calling it "arbitrary and political." In contrast, Senior Hamas official Basem Naim criticized the EU's actions as political hypocrisy and racism, describing the EU's sanctions as an unfair comparison between Israeli and Hamas actions.
