In a fervent denouncement, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has voiced his opposition to the central government's 'One Nation One Election' initiative. During a Joint Parliamentary Study Committee dialogue, he labeled the plan as politically motivated and a threat to India's federal structure.
Shivakumar, who also serves as the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president, declared the proposal as a power-centralizing scheme that disregards the democratic framework. He pointed out that past attempts to synchronize state elections have failed due to differing political term cycles and questioned the proposal's viability.
Highlighting the implications for regional parties, Shivakumar warned that such a move might suppress regional and opposition voices. Karnataka's Legislative Assembly had earlier passed a resolution opposing the initiative, continuing its stance aligned with Congress party leadership on a national level.
