Two Trinamool Congress leaders, including an MLA, moved the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday seeking protection from coercive action by police in connection with cases registered against them after the West Bengal assembly poll verdict.

Canning Paschim legislator Paresh Ram Das's counsel, Kishore Dutta, sought an urgent hearing in the matter while informing the court that six FIRs were lodged against his client on May 16 and claimed that many more were likely to be filed.

Dutta, who was the advocate general of West Bengal during the TMC government, told the court of Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya that he was seeking protection for his client from any coercive action in connection with the criminal cases lodged against him.

Justice Bhattacharyya said that he would hear the petition on Thursday.

Das was reelected from Canning Paschim assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas district for the second consecutive term with a margin of over 40,000 votes.

Another petition was moved before the bench by Kailash Kumar Mishra, the TMC's unsuccessful candidate from Bally in Howrah district, seeking protection from coercive action over criminal cases lodged against him following the declaration of assembly poll results on May 4.

The court said that the matter will appear on the hearing list as per the schedule for Thursday.
