The BJP on Sunday released a list of candidates for elections to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council for graduates and teachers' constituencies.

According to the list, the candidates are Awanish Kumar Singh (Lucknow, graduates), Manvendra Pratap Singh (Agra, graduates), Hari Singh Dhillon (Bareilly-Moradabad, teachers), Umesh Dwivedi (Lucknow, teachers) and Shrichand Sharma (Meerut, teachers).

A graduates' constituency is one in which only graduates from any recognised Indian university, or those with an equivalent qualification, are qualified to be enrolled in the voter rolls.

Similarly, in a teachers' constituency, only a full-time teacher at a secondary school or higher for at least three years out of the previous six years is eligible to vote.

The Election Commission of India is yet to announce the schedule for the legislative council polls.

In the 100-member Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, the BJP has 79 members, while its ally Apna Dal (Sonelal) has one.

The Samajwadi Party has 21 members, while five are from the 'other' category, while four are Independents.
