Assam is on an ambitious trajectory to reach a Rs 10 lakh crore economy by 2028, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Addressing the Assam Legislative Assembly, Sarma highlighted the state's impressive growth, with the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) soaring from Rs 4 lakh crore in 2021-22 to an estimated Rs 8.72 lakh crore today. This marks an annual growth rate ranging between 13 to 15 percent.
The Chief Minister emphasized that Assam's rapid economic expansion aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's national vision of a USD 5 trillion economy. The momentum is supported by Rs 5.61 lakh crore in tax devolution and central grants, transferred to the state between 2014-26. Notably, Assam benefited from over Rs. 17,000 crore in interest-free loans from the Scheme of Special Assistance to States for Capital Expenditure (SASCI), enabling substantial infrastructure projects.
Meanwhile, in a parallel development, Assam Parliamentary Affairs Minister Atul Bora, on behalf of CM Sarma, introduced "The Uniform Civil Code, Assam, Bill, 2026" to the Assam assembly. The bill is slated for discussion and potential passage on May 27. The focus remains on both economic progression and legislative initiatives in Assam.
