On Sunday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited his grandparents' home village in western Ireland, reconnecting with distant relatives and honoring his Irish heritage. Carney's grandparents emigrated to Canada in 1925, where his grandfather joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

During his visit, Carney quipped about discovering more cousins than expected. He also visited the family grave and planted a tree, engaging in local traditions. Carney emphasized the importance of stronger ties between Canada and Ireland, especially in light of the current global geopolitical climate.

Speaking at Trinity College Dublin, Carney urged for the creation of "ad hoc coalitions" to navigate the challenges of a world where the post-Cold War order is crumbling. Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin endorsed Carney's call for enhanced Canada-EU relations, as Ireland assumes a leading role in the EU Council.
