A sense of ''despondency'' prevailed in the country during the 10 years of the UPA government and it has been replaced by hope under the Modi government's rule, former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani said on Tuesday.
The work done by the Modi government during its nine-year tenure so far has been aimed at uplifting the poor in the society, Rupani said at a joint press conference with Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva and party MP Manoj Tiwari.
Rupani along with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has been deputed by the BJP to oversee the party's month-long campaign to create awareness about the Modi government's achievements during its nine years at the helm.
''The UPA government in its 10-year rule under Manmohan Singh did not do anything and there was a sense of despondency as no decisions were being made and no work was done. The government was paralysed and the country suffered losses,'' Rupani charged.
On the other hand, new hope and faith have arisen in the country during the nine years of the Modi government, he said.
Listing the achievements of the Modi government, the BJP leader said the most significant among them include the ''world's biggest'' health insurance scheme Ayushman Bharat, Covid management and free vaccination, construction of 12 crore toilets to benefit around 50 crore people, providing 11.88 crore water connections under 'Nal Se Jal' scheme and building 3.5 crore houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.
All these schemes and programmes benefitted the poor. Direct benefit transfer to the beneficiaries also helped curb corruption, he said.
BJP MP Tiwari said several big-ticket development projects were taken up for the first time in his North East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency under the Modi government.
The long-pending work on the Signature Bridge was completed, Harsh Vihar power transmission centre's capacity was increased by spending Rs 400 crore, first underground water reservoir was built, Delhi's first post office passport centre was opened at Yaumna Vihar, and many other projects were completed under the Modi government's tenure, he said.
Work on the Yamuna riverfront is progressing at a fast pace. It will include 10 lakes, a 10-kilometre-long cycle track and pathways and more than a dozen parks, he said.
Delhi BJP president Sachdeva said the people of the country are firmly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his ''honesty and dutifulness'', while opposition parties are trying to unite against him.
He said the Modi government is development-oriented and focuses on the poor through its schemes.
