On the occasion of World Environment Day, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan emphasized the state's commitment to preventing land degradation and preserving environmental balance. In a Facebook post, Vijayan articulated that this year's focus is on preventing land degradation and enhancing soil fertility.

Vijayan attributed land degradation to the neoliberal economic order, citing land grabbing and illegal encroachments by capitalistic entities, compounded by climate change effects. He stressed that extensive planning and effective policy interventions are crucial to addressing these challenges.

The Chief Minister highlighted various initiatives under the Haritha Kerala Mission, aimed at river conservation, rainwater harvesting, and waste management. He called for collective efforts from the public to counteract monopolistic encroachments and sustain a balanced ecosystem. To mark the day, Vijayan planted a sapling at Cliff House, his official residence.
