The southwest monsoon has progressed into most regions of north Bengal, the Met office confirmed on Thursday. It issued a warning of heavy rainfall over the coming five days across the region.

Favorable conditions suggest that the monsoon will advance into parts of south Bengal and the remaining areas of Malda in the north within the next two to three days.

The forecast predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall in Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, and Darjeeling districts of north Bengal in the coming five days. Meanwhile, south Bengal districts will likely experience thunderstorms, lightning, and wind speeds reaching 30 to 40 km/h over the next three days. Pundibari in Cooch Behar recorded the highest rainfall at 160 mm in the past 24 hours till 8:30 am Thursday. Other areas with significant rainfall include Cooch Behar town (140 mm), Gangarampur (130 mm), Barobisha (120 mm), and Mathabhanga (120 mm).
