A massive landslide at Shirur in Karnataka's Uttara Kannada district on Tuesday left seven people, including a five-member family, feared dead, according to initial reports from officials.
The family, operating a small shop along National Highway 66, may have been buried under mud and soil that slid down from a nearby hill, as per official sources. The landslide also pushed a gas tanker into the Gangavali river, with the driver and cleaner, who were reportedly at the shop during the incident, now missing. Rescue operations are currently underway.
Karwar MLA Satish Sail raised the issue in the Assembly, stating that 10-15 people might have fallen into the river following the landslide. Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda informed that a report has been requested from the district administration, with further statements to be made later in the day.
