Devastating Landslides in Wayanad: A Community in Peril

A devastating series of landslides in Wayanad district have resulted in 177 deaths and over 200 injuries. Rescue efforts are ongoing as many people remain unaccounted for amidst challenging conditions. The district administration has reported 256 completed autopsies and 92 body parts recovered from the debris.

As many as 177 people have died and over 200 were injured in massive landslides that struck Wayanad district two days ago, with the toll expected to rise further as rescue operations continue, the district administration said on Thursday.

Among the deceased are 25 children and 70 women. A total of 256 autopsies, including those of body parts, have been completed, and 100 bodies have been identified so far.

The administration noted that 234 individuals were admitted to hospitals from the affected areas, with 92 still receiving treatment. Search efforts are ongoing as rescuers navigate waterlogged soil and destroyed structures, looking for survivors or more bodies among the debris.

Officially, 191 people remain missing, although sources suggest the actual number could be higher. The landslides occurred between 2 am and 4.10 am on Tuesday, during which many victims were asleep, leading to a significant number of casualties.

Torrential rains triggered the landslides, ravaging the scenic hamlets of Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha, and leaving widespread death, destruction, and despair in their wake.
