IAF Helicopters Join Rescue Efforts in Uttarakhand

The IAF's Chinook and MI17 helicopters have been deployed to rescue pilgrims stranded on the rain-damaged trek route to Kedarnath, Uttarakhand. Extensive damage occurred due to a cloudburst near Lincholi. Over 5,000 people have been evacuated, with additional rescue efforts from SDRF and NDRF teams.

The Indian Air Force's Chinook and MI17 helicopters joined rescue operations in Uttarakhand to evacuate pilgrims stranded on the rain-afflicted trek route to Kedarnath.

Extensive damage was caused by a cloudburst in Junglechatti near Lincholi. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reported that 5,000 people have been evacuated to safety since the start of rescue operations, with some airlifted.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are assisting in the efforts. Heavy rain has caused substantial damage, engaging the entire government machinery. On my request, the PMO deployed the IAF's Chinook and MI17 helicopters,'' Dhami said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured all possible assistance. By Friday afternoon, nearly 21,00 people were rescued with more than 3,000 evacuated on Thursday. Food and water supplies have been distributed, and medical aid provided to 286 people.

Additional helpline numbers have been issued for information on stranded pilgrims. The Kedarnath yatra is currently on hold until the route is cleared and restored.
