Tropical Storm Debby Wreaks Havoc: Major Flooding and Tornadoes Hit Southeast
Tropical Storm Debby hit northeast of Charleston, South Carolina, causing flash flooding and severe weather. Tornadoes, heavy rainfall, and flooding affected multiple states, leaving communities underwater and resulting in state emergencies. The storm, which first made landfall in Florida, has claimed six lives and caused significant property damage.
Tropical Storm Debby made landfall northeast of Charleston early Thursday, bringing heavy rainfall and the risk of flash flooding to the already soaked South Carolina coast.
Debby, which had its first landfall in Florida on Monday, could deliver up to 9 inches of rain to parts of eastern South Carolina. Some regions have experienced more than 25 inches of rain since Debby's onslaught began.
In Wilson County, North Carolina, an apparent tornado damaged multiple buildings early Thursday. The National Weather Service warned that moisture reintroduced into Debby from the Atlantic would exacerbate flooding concerns as the storm moves inland.
