Hundreds of Portuguese firefighters are battling a wildfire that has engulfed parts of Madeira's south coast, a renowned tourist destination. Strong winds are complicating efforts to control the blaze, which started Wednesday in the remote area of Ribeira Brava and has since spread to Camara de Lobos.

Nearly 200 firefighters, supported by 38 vehicles, are facing challenges due to high temperatures, low humidity, and gusty winds. A helicopter was deployed but had to halt operations as night fell. The President of the Regional Government of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, suggested arson in an inaccessible area was the cause.

While no injuries have been reported, 160 people were evacuated as a precaution. Madeira has been placed on an orange alert due to high temperatures, with dozens of flights being canceled as a result. Additional firefighting teams from mainland Portugal and the Azores are en route to assist.
