One person has died and six others are missing after a luxury yacht was struck by a violent storm and subsequently sank off the coast of Palermo, Italy, the Italian coast guard reported.

The 56-meter-long sailboat, British-registered, had 22 people onboard and sank just before sunrise. The missing individuals are reported to be of British, American, and Canadian nationality.

"The wind was extremely strong. Though bad weather was forecasted, this magnitude was unexpected," a Palermo coast guard official told Reuters. Italy has been experiencing severe storms and heavy rainfall, following weeks of intense heat, contributing to floods and landslides in the north.

Eight of the 15 people rescued, including a one-year-old child, were taken to local hospitals and are in stable condition, according to local media. The wreck has been located at a depth of 49 meters, and divers are currently inspecting it.

Prosecutors in Termini Imerese have launched an investigation to ascertain the cause of the incident. The yacht, named Bayesian, was constructed by Italian shipbuilder Perini in 2008.

The luxury vessel, with an aluminum hull, could accommodate 12 guests and up to 10 crew members. It departed from the Sicilian port of Milazzo on August 14 and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, according to the vessel tracking app Vesselfinder.

A UK foreign ministry spokesperson stated that British officials are liaising with local authorities and are prepared to offer consular support to impacted Britons.
