A forest fire broke out near Japfu Christian College in Nagaland's Kohima district on Thursday, causing widespread alarm among residents. The fire, which ignited at about 11:30 am, has rapidly advanced, posing a risk to Mt. Shüho/Shüho Peak, an area renowned for its unique flora, including rare red rhododendrons and orchids.

While the origin of the fire remains uncertain, there is speculation that it could have resulted from jungle clearing operations associated with jhum cultivation, according to local officials. Inspector Kelesa, the officer in charge of the fire and emergency services at Kohima (South) Station, indicated that the department received an alert about the fire near noon, prompting the dispatch of fire tenders to the scene. However, the difficult mountainous terrain, approximately 13 km from Kohima in the southern Angami region, is hampering efforts to combat the flames.

Despite these challenges, fire authorities have managed to partially contain the fire in areas accessible to their equipment. Nevertheless, Balie Kere, the chairman of the Kigwema village council, expressed concern that the fire might spread to populated zones or adjacent villages, causing significant environmental damage if not controlled promptly.
