Cyclone Zelia Forces Port Closures and Minimal Damage in WA's Iron Ore Hub

Western Australia's ports, including Port Hedland, resumed operations after Cyclone Zelia, the most severe storm since April 2023, forced closures. The cyclone, reaching category five, brought heavy rain and winds but caused minimal damage. Authorities remained wary, monitoring potential threats to isolated towns due to rising water levels.

Cyclone Zelia Forces Port Closures and Minimal Damage in WA's Iron Ore Hub

Western Australia's pivotal ports, including Dampier and Varanus Island, have reopened following the impact of Tropical Cyclone Zelia. The severe weather, which hit the Pilbara coast with ferocity, prompted several port closures, jeopardizing critical oil and gas hubs in the region.

Pilbara Ports declared safe operations could resume after thorough inspections ensured the safety of navigation aids, channels, and berths. Initially triggering the shutdown of the world’s largest iron ore hub, Port Hedland, Zelia's landfall as a category five cyclone spurred precautionary measures, with Cape Lambert also closing its doors to prevent any potential mishaps.

Though Zelia weakened over time, morphing into a tropical low, remnants of its presence linger, with heightened water levels potentially cutting off access to nearby towns. Meanwhile, major industry players like BHP and Fortescue continued to assess the cyclone's minimal damage, gradually restoring operations.
