CPI(M) Challenges Delhi's Risky Eviction Drive

The CPI(M) has criticized the Delhi government's demolition of Madrasi Camp, a historical settlement, labeling the move as illegal. The party highlights the potential socio-economic disruption caused by rehousing residents far from the area and criticizes the lack of a fair rehabilitation process.

The CPI(M) State Committee has called on the Delhi government to halt the demolition of Madrasi Camp in Jangpura, describing the action as ''illegal and indefensible.'' The camp, a recognized slum in Delhi for the past 60 years, is protected under the NCT of Delhi Special Provisions Act, 2011.

Despite residents holding valid documentation, one-third of households have been denied rehabilitation, according to CPI(M). The party pointed out that relocation to Narela, 50 kilometers away, violates the Delhi Slum and JJ Rehabilitation and Relocation Policy of 2015, which mandates alternative accommodation near the existing settlement.

CPI(M) emphasized that moving families to distant locations would severely affect their livelihoods, pushing them into economic hardship. It also stressed the importance of a transparent rehabilitation process, ensuring long-term residents are not wrongfully excluded, and urged for an independent assessment linking nearby infrastructure to drainage issues, rather than the settlement.
