Street Vendors Challenge Eviction in Shillong: A Battle for Justice

Hawkers and street vendors in Shillong's Khyndailad area have risen in protest against the eviction drive initiated by the Shillong Municipal Board. The vendors demand authorities rectify the flaws in the relocation process, voicing strong opposition on Monday.

Assisted by magistrates and police, the eviction was part of efforts to declare the area a 'no vending zone.' A floor of the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority complex was designated as a 'vending zone.' However, the Meghalaya and Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association rejected the order, calling for adjustments to irregularities by the Provisional Town Vending Committee.

Angela Rangad of Thma U Rangli Juki, representing the hawkers, condemned the forceful eviction, stressing the need for conditions that ensure suitability and transparency. The association highlighted flaws in digital surveys, inadequate safety and economic conditions of the MUDA complex, and called for a transparent claims process before relocating.
