Helicopter Evacuations as Mudslide Sweeps Through Austrian Valley

In Austria's Gschnitztal valley, severe thunderstorms triggered a mudslide, leading to evacuations by helicopter. Approximately 100 people from Gschnitz village and nearby mountain huts were flown out using a Black Hawk helicopter, as roads and hiking trails became impassable. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Severe thunderstorms sparked a significant mudslide in Austria's Gschnitztal valley, leading to emergency evacuations on Tuesday. The Austrian Armed Forces deployed a Black Hawk helicopter to remove around 100 individuals from the village of Gschnitz and surrounding mountain huts.

As intense rains lashed the area on Monday, homes and roads were overwhelmed by water and debris. Notably, the Bremerhutte, Innsbruckerhutte, and Tribulaunhutte huts were cut off, with hiking trails rendered inaccessible, according to Tyrol's Centre for Crisis and Disaster Management.

Despite no reported injuries, the mudslide wreaked havoc, notably damaging an open-air museum focused on watermills. Authorities urged residents to remain indoors and steer clear of underground areas, as emergency services keep close tabs on the unfolding situation.
