Forest Land Diversion Soars: Impact and Insights

The Indian government has approved the diversion of over 78,100 hectares of forest land for various projects in the last four years. The data reflects the highest allocations in states like Madhya Pradesh and Odisha. Mining and hydropower are the main contributors to these diversions.

The Centre revealed that over 78,100 hectares of forest land have been sanctioned for diversion nationwide over the past four years, catering to various developmental projects.

Union Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh reported to the Rajya Sabha that, just in 2025's first half, 12,324.32 hectares were approved for non-forest utilization. From April 2021 to March 2025, a total of 78,135.84 hectares have been diverted.

Madhya Pradesh emerged as the frontrunner with 17,393.65 hectares diverted, followed by substantial figures in Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. Mining and hydropower projects are primary drivers of this trend.
