In a significant move towards modernization, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated Kartavya Bhavan, the foremost of ten proposed Common Central Secretariat buildings. This initiative is part of the larger Central Vista redevelopment project, aimed at streamlining government operations by co-locating several key ministries.
The newly debuted Kartavya Bhavan-03 will house the Home Affairs, External Affairs, Rural Development, MSME, DoPT, Petroleum & Natural Gas ministries, along with the Principal Scientific Adviser's office. Currently, these ministries operate from ageing infrastructures, such as Shastri Bhawan and Nirman Bhawan, which have been labeled ‘structurally outdated and inefficient’ by the government.
The HUA Ministry intends to complete two additional CCS buildings next month, with others to follow by 2026. Under this scheme, temporary relocations will occur over the next two years. Certain buildings, including the National Museum and National Archives, will be preserved to maintain historical continuity amid vast infrastructural updates.
