Frustration Over Metro Tunnelling Damages in Bowbazar

Residents of Bowbazar in north Kolkata staged a protest on Friday, demanding action from authorities after repeated subsidence incidents linked to the East-West Metro tunnelling left over 200 homes damaged.

Local councillor Biswarup Dey highlighted that several old structures along Durga Pituri Lane developed severe cracks, forcing families into alternate living arrangements since 2019. Despite recent expansions of the metro network, affected families like Sourav Mukherjee’s struggle without a clear timeline for returning home.

The Kolkata Metro Railway Corporation Ltd (KMRCL) plans to issue tenders to rebuild and renovate the impacted houses, with necessary approvals in place from the municipal building department. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated three new metro routes, marking significant advancements in the city's transit system.
