At the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP30) held in Belém, Brazil, on November 17, 2025, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav addressed global stakeholders at the LeadIT Industry Leaders’ Roundtable. As Co-Chair of the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT), the Minister placed India at the heart of global efforts to foster sustainable, technology-driven industrial transformation.

Marking the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement, the roundtable was seen as a pivotal moment to move from international climate commitments to real-time implementation. Shri Yadav emphasized, “The world must now deliver on the promises it made ten years ago. It is time to operationalize ambition into action.”

LeadIT: A Model for Global Industrial Collaboration

Launched jointly by India and Sweden in 2019, the LeadIT platform has matured into a powerful alliance of 18 countries and 27 industries, uniting governments, corporate leaders, and international institutions around the mission of a low-carbon industrial transition. Shri Yadav underlined that LeadIT has become a replicable model of international climate cooperation—providing technical support, encouraging peer learning, and catalyzing low-emissions industrial development.

He said, “India sees LeadIT not just as a partnership, but as a strategic tool for equitable climate solutions. It links policy with practice, and ambition with accountability.”

India’s Dual Path: Economic Growth and Emissions Reduction

Highlighting India’s climate progress under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shri Yadav pointed out India’s success in decoupling economic growth from emissions. “India, as the fourth-largest economy and the fastest-growing major economy, reduced its emission intensity of GDP by 36% between 2005 and 2020,” he informed. This, he said, demonstrates a balance between sustainability and development, showcasing India as a global example of inclusive climate action.

The Minister also pointed to India's efforts in renewable energy expansion, biodiversity protection, disaster resilience, and climate-smart industry practices as signs of a country that is committed to holistic, systems-based climate progress.

Industry Transition Platform: Accelerating Innovation through Indo-Swedish Collaboration

Shri Yadav announced that under the Industry Transition Platform (ITP)—a flagship collaboration funded jointly by India and Sweden—18 industries and research institutions from both countries will soon embark on joint projects. These will include:

  • Value generation from industrial by-products

  • Carbon capture and utilization (CCU)

  • AI-driven process optimization

  • Electrification of industrial systems

  • Hydrogen-based heating solutions

These initiatives are expected to become future-facing industrial solutions, and the ITP is envisioned as a centerpiece of India’s clean manufacturing transition, capable of producing scalable and replicable models for other economies.

Corporate Collaboration: Tata Motors and Volvo Show the Way

A notable success story highlighted at the roundtable was the collaboration between Tata Motors and Volvo Group, facilitated through LeadIT, to decarbonize heavy-duty transport. Shri Yadav described it as a symbol of cross-border industrial leadership, where technology, policy alignment, and corporate strategy converge to reduce carbon footprints in a critical sector.

“This is the future—where ambition aligns with action, and industries work across borders to deliver meaningful outcomes,” the Minister said.

New Membership and the Road Ahead

In a significant development, the Minister announced that SKF, a leading global industrial engineering company, has joined the LeadIT platform. This addition, he said, signals growing interest among global firms to align with low-carbon transition pathways and share technologies and best practices.

He reaffirmed that technology transfer, equitable innovation, and financial support must remain central to global efforts if the goals of the Paris Agreement are to be met.

A Call for Unified Global Action

Concluding his address, Shri Yadav issued a clarion call to countries, industries, and international agencies to scale up cooperation and fast-track implementation. He reiterated that collective industrial transformation is not just a climate necessity, but a development imperative. “Let us lead by example, and let our actions today shape a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future for generations to come,” he urged.

The roundtable underscored that India is no longer just a participant in global climate discourse—it is now a proactive, solution-oriented leader, particularly in the arena of industrial sustainability.
