Odisha's forest officials have intercepted two fishing trawlers from Andhra Pradesh for unlawful operations near the Rushikulya river mouth in Ganjam district. These actions violated a seasonal ban designed to protect the endangered Olive Ridley turtles, an official confirmed.

The trawlers contained over 70 kg of fish and involved eight fishermen, who were subsequently transferred to the Marine Fisheries Department for further action. This intervention is part of a government-imposed seven-month fishing prohibition to safeguard the turtles during their critical breeding and mating periods.

During joint patrols by forestry, police, and fisheries personnel, the Andhra Pradesh boats were found within the restricted zone. Cases have been filed under the Odisha Marine Fishing Regulation Act. Rushikulya is a crucial nesting site for these turtles, drawing thousands for mass nesting.
