The Telangana government has announced a significant increase in the number of wards within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), doubling them from 150 to 300. This decision comes after the integration of 27 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) located on the outskirts of Hyderabad into the GHMC.
This expansion positions GHMC as the Telangana Core Urban Region, which is pivotal for strategic planning and development. The official notification, released on December 8, stipulates the reorganization of wards and the number of elected members required for governance.
The enlargement of GHMC enhances its status as a major civic entity, amplifying its importance in the region's political landscape, especially as the current elected body's term concludes in February 2026.
