Delhi made strides in 2025 by introducing over 100,000 new metered water connections, a major step in reducing the city's unmetered connections. According to the Delhi government, unmetered connections dropped from 113,429 in 2013-14 to 108,829 in 2024-25, showing a solid move towards metering accountability.
The Delhi Jal Board has faced challenges with unmetered connections, impacting revenue. In 2024-25, metered connections surged to over 2.8 million, up significantly from the previous year. Additionally, water consumption, including losses, rose to 8,757.77 lakh kilolitres per day, showcasing the city's growing needs.
Efforts to overhaul the billing system are underway, guided by state Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma. The DJB also explores policy changes to mandate water bills for property transactions, while expanding the water network and preventing unauthorized use remains crucial.
