Storm Kristin Wreaks Havoc in Portugal: Billions in Damages and Power Outages
Storm Kristin ravaged central Portugal, leaving hundreds of homes roofless and tens of thousands without power. The government approved a €2.5 billion aid package for recovery, while damage could rise to billions. At least six people died, and over 170,000 households remained without electricity as of Monday.
Last week's Storm Kristin battered central Portugal, causing substantial damage and leaving hundreds of families in devastation. With roofless homes and tens of thousands experiencing power failures, residents have been forced to queue for emergency supplies.
The powerful storm struck on Wednesday, bringing winds of up to 200 kph and heavy rains that uprooted trees and tore off roofs. Tragically, the disaster claimed at least six lives and cut off electricity to hundreds of thousands, including in the hard-hit district of Leiria, a notable industrial region.
In response, the Portuguese government announced a €2.5 billion aid package over the weekend, aimed at helping affected citizens and businesses recover. Authorities assess that storm-related damages could reach between €1.5 billion and €2 billion, further straining local infrastructure and causing ongoing electricity outages for some 170,000 residences. The state of calamity has been extended in affected areas as further adverse weather continues to threaten the region.
