Ladakh Introduces Rock Check Dams to Combat Water Scarcity

Ladakh launches its first rock check dam under the Sindhu Jal Samriddhi Abhiyan campaign to tackle water scarcity. Initiated by Vinai Kumar Saxena, the project aims to improve irrigation by utilizing eco-friendly construction methods. The dam enhances water retention without using concrete, benefiting the region's agriculture.

Ladakh has taken a significant step in addressing its recurring water scarcity issues with the successful completion of the first-ever rock check dam. This initiative is part of the Sindhu Jal Samriddhi Abhiyan campaign, inaugurated by Vinai Kumar Saxena, aimed at harnessing water in the high-altitude region.

Saxena, while launching the initiative over the Indus River in Upshi, highlighted the dam's eco-friendly design, constructed entirely from local rock resources without cement or concrete. This structure not only supports irrigation but also enhances the region's water security. The plan seeks to establish additional dams at strategic points to further maximize river water utility.

The rock dam extends nearly 200 feet in length and is engineered to sustain the increased water flow anticipated during peak irrigation times. Such measures aim to improve water accessibility for Ladakh's remote villages, ensuring sustainable agricultural practices even during the challenging sowing season.
