Rosatom Eyes Role in Kazakhstan's Nuclear Expansion

Russia's Rosatom is poised to enter negotiations for a second nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan, pending official communication from the Kazakh government. Kazakhstan has already decided on a Chinese firm for the plant's primary construction. The Balkhash NPP project sees Rosatom taking a leading role in its technical framework.

Russia's state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, is preparing to negotiate its involvement in building a second nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan, according to CEO Alexei Likhachev. While no official word from Kazakhstan has been received, Rosatom hopes to begin talks soon.

Kazakhstan has already approved the plant's construction, selecting the China National Nuclear Corporation as the primary constructor. Once formal communication arrives, Rosatom will quickly move to practical negotiations.

In tandem, an agreement and preliminary contract for Kazakhstan's first nuclear facility, Balkhash NPP, will be signed during President Vladimir Putin's visit. Rosatom will handle the technical design and equipment supply, planning to commence active construction in 2027, with completion expected by the mid-2030s.
