A Shiv Sena MP has demanded that a sitting stand in Mumbai's Wankhede stadium be named after late cricket icon Ajit Wadekar.
In a letter addressed to the honorary secretary of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), MP Rahul Shewale said Wadekar had made the country as well as Mumbai proud as Indian captain. "Wadekar made Mumbaikars proud, as under his captaincy India recorded maiden wins in England and West Indies.
He had been honoured with Padmashri as well as state government's Arjun award. A stand-in Wankhede stadium should be named after him, to recognize his contribution," the Mumbai South Central MP stated.
He said the demise of Wadekar (77) is a major loss to the world of cricket. Wadekar, who had led India to their first victory in West Indies and England in 1971, died at a South Mumbai hospital on August 15 after a prolonged illness.
