NFL-Cowboys quarterback Prescott set for surgery after leg injury

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was sent to hospital and headed for surgery after suffering a significant injury to his right leg during a game against the New York Giants in Dallas on Sunday.

In the third quarter, Prescott ran the ball on first down and as he was tackled, his right ankle bent severely under the weight of Giants defensive back Logan Ryan and he immediately called for attention from the sideline. The 27-year-old Louisiana native had tears in his eyes as he was carted off the field and raised a fist as the limited number of fans allowed at AT&T Stadium due to the COVID-19 pandemic cheered him on.

Prescott was hospitalized and will undergo ankle surgery on Sunday night, ESPN reported. Players from around the league offered prayers and voiced support for Prescott, who was off to a great start with three straight games of 450 yards passing.

"Big time Prayers up man @dak !!!!" Kansas City Chief quarterback Patrick Mahomes wrote on Twitter. "Devastated for @dak - one of the truly great people in the NFL," former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman wrote.

Prescott was replaced by backup quarterback Andy Dalton, who helped finish the drive with a touchdown by running back Ezekiel Elliott. The Cowboys went on to win 37-34 and improve to 2-3 on the season.
