Los Angeles Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa will miss the season opener Sunday with an injury to his left foot, the team announced Friday.
Bosa suffered a left foot injury during practice on Aug. 7 but injured it again in practice on Wednesday. He sat out practice Thursday, and on Friday, he was seen with a walking boot, according to the NFL Network.
The Chargers will host AFC West rival Kansas City on Sunday. That should make life easier for quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who begins his first season as the starter for the Chiefs.
According to NFL Research, only three players have averaged more sacks per game than Bosa's 0.82 average in their first two seasons in the league: Aldon Smith 1.05, Shawne Merriman 1.00, and Von Miller 0.97
Bosa and Melvin Ingram are the NFL's top sack duo, recording 41.5 sacks since 2016.
Bosa, 23, missed the first four games of his rookie season in 2016 with a hamstring injury but had played all 28 games since. He had 12.5 sacks, 21 quarterback hits, 70 tackles (11 for loss) and four forced fumbles last year, earning his first career Pro Bowl nod.
