Golf: Bradley beats Rose in a playoff to win BMW Championship

American Keegan Bradley ended a six-year drought when he won the BMW Championship in a playoff with Justin Rose on Monday, though the Englishman's consolation was to become world number one. Bradley parred the first extra hole to edge Rose after the pair had finished regulation on 20-under-par 260 at waterlogged Aronimink in suburban Philadelphia. Rose missed a four-foot putt that would have extended the playoff but still became the 22nd different player to hold the world number one ranking.

ITF defends U.S. Open chair umpire, Ramos

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has given its backing to Portuguese chair umpire Carlos Ramos who Serena Williams branded a "liar" and a "thief" during her U.S. Open final defeat by Japan's Naomi Osaka on Saturday. Williams, who was seeking a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam singles title, was given a warning for a coaching violation before incurring a point penalty for smashing her racket. After accusing Ramos of being "a thief for stealing a point from me", she was docked a game.

Justin Verlander struck out 10 in a triumphant return to Comerica Park and the Houston Astros held on for a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Monday night. The longtime Tigers ace was making his first start at his former home park since he was traded last season. He gave up two runs on six hits while walking one in seven innings.

NFL: Key penalty in Steelers-Browns called in error

The NFL's head of officiating said Monday that Browns defensive end Myles Garrett should not have been called for roughing the passer in the second quarter of Cleveland's 21-21 tie with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Garrett took down Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for a third-down incompletion and was called for a personal foul. On the next play, Steelers running back James Conner ran in for a touchdown and a 7-0 Pittsburgh lead.
