Mariners' Paxton out due to pneumonia

Paxton was feeling ill earlier in the week and didn't travel with the team to Anaheim, Calif., after a Wednesday home loss to the San Diego Padres. The (Tacoma, Wash.) News-Tribune reported Thursday night that Paxton was headed to a Seattle-area hospital.

Seattle Mariners ace left-hander James Paxton will miss his scheduled Friday start against the Los Angeles Angels due to what manager Scott Servais termed a "form of pneumonia."

Paxton was feeling ill earlier in the week and didn't travel with the team to Anaheim, Calif., after a Wednesday home loss to the San Diego Padres. The (Tacoma, Wash.) News-Tribune reported Thursday night that Paxton was headed to a Seattle-area hospital.

Servais told reporters that he is hopeful Paxton (11-6, 3.83 ERA in 26 starts) can return at some point on the 10-game road trip that begins Thursday night against the Angels.

Servais also said right-hander Felix Hernandez (ankle) didn't make the trip. Servais feels it is possible Hernandez will pitch again this season.

Hernandez is 8-13 with a 5.46 ERA in 27 starts plus one relief outing.

Also, shortstop Jean Segura (illness) was due to sit out his third consecutive game on Thursday. Segura ranked fifth in the American League with a .310 average through Wednesday.
