D-backs RHP Buchholz (forearm) out for season
Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Clay Buchholz will miss the remainder of the season after being diagnosed with a flexor strain in his right forearm.
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo announced the news following the team's 4-2 win over the Houston Astros on Friday night. Buchholz had an MRI earlier in the day.
Buchholz was scratched from his start against Colorado on Thursday after feeling tightness in his right elbow. Buchholz missed almost all of 2017 with a torn flexor tendon in his right arm.
The loss is key to the Diamondbacks, who are 3 1/2 games back in the National League West and three games out of a wild-card spot. Buchholz has been a reliable starter since joining the team on a minor league deal in May, going 7-2 with a 2.01 ERA in 16 starts.
Buchholz, 34, is 5-1 with a 1.66 ERA in nine starts since returning from a stint on the disabled list with a strained left oblique on July 24.
Matt Koch and Matt Andriese are expected to receive consideration to replace Buchholz in the rotation.
Arizona left-hander T.J. McFarland is also dealing with an injury as he was diagnosed with inflammation of a bone spur around his elbow. McFarland is not expected to be sidelined for the season.
McFarland, 29, has a 2.00 ERA in 47 games this season. He last pitched Sept. 8.
