The Milwaukee Brewers earned their fans an extra treat with their 6-5 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series on Friday night.

The victory was the Brewers' 12th in a row, the magic number to trigger a promotion from local restaurant chain George Webb dating back to the 1940s. The Wisconsin-based restaurant will be offering free burgers to customers during a four-hour window Thursday afternoon.

"Who knew that we would make it this far and the biggest piece of stress going into this game would be George Webb's hamburgers," Brewers manager Craig Counsell joked pregame.

George Webb himself had promised free burgers when the Brewers, then a minor league team, would win 12 straight.

That finally happened at the major league level in April 1987, and the restaurant said it gave away nearly 170,000 burgers when it honoured the promotion.

"I remember the concept of free hamburgers going back so long, it's hard to believe that it's never happened since then," Counsell said. "I guess it's a pretty good streak. But it's something for everybody to talk about for sure, and I mean, free hamburgers are free hamburgers. I know you all will be there."
