A Cincinnati Reds minor league prospect was killed and two others were injured, one critically, in a car accident Saturday morning in the Dominican Republic, the team announced.

Nineteen-year-old Jairo Capellan, a 6-foot-8 right-handed pitcher, was killed. Another right-hander, Raul Hernandez, was listed in critical condition, and outfielder Emilio Garcia was in stable condition, according to the Reds.

Hernandez and Garcia also are 19. All three players are from Santo Domingo and played for the DSL Reds in the Rookie Dominican Summer League this year.

"We received this terrible news and send our condolences and support to the families, friends and teammates of Jairo, Raul and Emilio," said

Reds CEO Bob Castellini in a statement released on Twitter. "Our Dominican operations are an integral part of the Reds organization, and this tragedy affects us all. We will remain closely involved to help everyone through this difficult time."

No details of the accident were available Saturday.

In the summer league, Capellan had a 2-3 record and a 6.25 ERA. Hernandez struck out 77 batters in 51 innings and posted a 2-4 record with a 2.29 ERA. Garcia batted .205 and had no home runs with 11 RBIs in 47 games.

"Jairo was a talented young pitcher with a bright future who was taken from us much too soon," said Joe Noboa, Reds Latin America field coordinator, in the team statement. "He will be missed by everyone who knew him - his teammates, coaches and our Dominican Academy staff."
