Marcell Jacobs, who emerged as the Olympic 100-meter champion in Tokyo, is a name that few knew outside of Italy. Yet, three years filled with injuries have kept the Texas-born Italian shrouded in mystery.
American sprinter Noah Lyles garners the spotlight heading into the Paris Games after his three-gold sweep at last year's world championships. Meanwhile, other racers have dipped under the 10-second mark—an achievement that Jacobs hasn't reached in nearly two years.
Jacobs, defending but underdog at the same time, relishes the under-the-radar status and focuses on his preparation. Dropping his longtime coach, he now trains in Jacksonville, Florida, with seasoned coach Rana Reider and an elite group of sprinters. Jacobs has battled numerous physical issues, but he remains determined to reclaim his Olympic spotlight.
