As the Paris Olympics approach, American standout Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is setting the pace in the 400 meters, backed by impressive performances from Jamaica's Nickisha Pryce and Poland's Natalia Kaczmarek. On Monday, Kaczmarek clocked an astonishing 48.98 seconds at the European athletics championships, marking a significant feat as the third consecutive day a woman broke the 49-second barrier.
This series of record-breaking runs began with Pryce's 48.89 for Arkansas at the NCAA championships on Saturday, followed by McLaughlin-Levrone's 48.75 in New York on Sunday. In a thrilling finish in Rome, Kaczmarek surpassed Ireland's Rhasidat Adeleke in the final meters, shattering Irena Szewinska's 48-year-old Polish national record of 49.28 and setting the fastest European time this century.
Meanwhile, in the men's 400 meters, Belgium's Alexander Doom secured a championship record with a time of 44.15, beating Charles Dobson of Britain and Liemarvin Bonevacia of the Netherlands. In the men's hammer throw, host Italy's Sara Fantini caused an upset by defeating three-time defending Olympic champion Anita Wlodarczyk for gold. Switzerland's Timothe Mumenthaler also surprised the crowd by narrowly winning the 200 meters in 20.28 seconds.
