Wanindu Hasaranga has stepped down as captain of Sri Lanka's Twenty20 team, the country's cricket board announced on Thursday. This decision follows Sri Lanka's early elimination from the T20 World Cup hosted in the West Indies and the United States.

The 26-year-old all-rounder was appointed last December, taking over from Dasun Shanaka. Under his leadership, the 2014 T20 World Cup champions failed to advance to the Super Eight round of the tournament.

In a statement, Hasaranga said, "It is in the best interest of Sri Lanka Cricket that I decided to relinquish the captaincy duties and remain in the side as a player." Despite stepping down as captain, Hasaranga emphasized his commitment to the team, stating, "Sri Lanka will always have my utmost best efforts as a player, and I will support and stand by my team and leadership as always."
