The U.S. Soccer Coach Search: Is Jurgen Klopp the Answer?

Jim Curtin, the Philadelphia Union coach, believes the search for a new U.S. soccer coach to replace Gregg Berhalter is straightforward if Jurgen Klopp is available. Other candidates being speculated include Thierry Henry and Marcelo Bielsa. The selected coach will have a tight preparation schedule for the 2026 World Cup.

Jim Curtin, the head coach of Philadelphia Union, believes finding a successor for Gregg Berhalter as the U.S. men's national team coach shouldn't be overly complicated. 'If Jurgen Klopp is available and willing, there's no need for an interview process. He is the right choice,' Curtin remarked on Thursday.

However, Curtin acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Klopp's interest. Klopp, who left Liverpool this spring after a successful nine-season tenure, is a fan-favorite to replace Berhalter, whose contract wasn't renewed following the team's early exit from the Copa America.

Other potential candidates being discussed include European football icons Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, and Marcelo Bielsa. The USSF, led by sporting director Matt Crocker, is conducting the search with the 2026 World Cup in mind. The new coach will face significant challenges, including a limited preparation window and weak goalkeeper options.
