Carragher Urges England to Bring Their A-Game Against Spain in EURO 2024 Final
Former England footballer Jamie Carragher emphasizes the need for an exceptional performance by the Three Lions against Spain in the EURO 2024 final. Carragher highlighted the importance of robust defense and goalkeeping as England aims to secure their first major tournament victory in 58 years.
Former England footballer Jamie Carragher has stressed that the Three Lions must be at their best when they face Spain in the upcoming EURO 2024 final at the Olympiastadion in Berlin this Sunday.
Speaking exclusively to Sky Sports, Carragher highlighted the need for England to deliver a performance unlike any they've shown in the tournament so far. 'We'll have to be at the top of our game. We will have to put in a performance that we haven't seen from this team in this tournament so far. I think we were fantastic in the first half of the semi-final against Netherlands, and I think we were fantastic in the very first game against Serbia as well,' Carragher noted.
Carragher pointed out that England's match against the Netherlands was a closely contested affair. 'I think we'll need more than a good half of football. I think we'll also be asked to defend for long periods in this game as well, that's something we haven't been asked to do throughout this tournament. Everyone we've played, we have been better than, although Holland may have been a 50/50 game,' he remarked.
Emphasizing the critical role of defense and goalkeeping, Carragher added, 'There will be a lot of questions about the goalkeeper and the back four, and they have been fantastic throughout this tournament. I think today is a step up in class from what we have seen in this tournament and England will have to step up as well.'
Spain secured their place in the final by defeating France 2-1 in the first semi-final, while England triumphed over the Netherlands 1-2 in the second semi-final, thanks to Ollie Watkins' late goal. Managed by Gareth Southgate, England not only booked a spot in a major tournament final on foreign soil for the first time in history but also moved closer to ending their 58-year wait for a major trophy.
England's appearance in the final marks their second consecutive time reaching this stage in the EURO competition. In EURO 2020, they fell short against Italy in a heart-wrenching penalty shootout. Recalling their semi-final match against the Netherlands, the game saw early Dutch dominance with Xavi Simons scoring an impressive goal. England's Harry Kane equalized in the 18th minute, followed by Ollie Watkins' decisive goal in the dying moments of the match, securing England's place in the final.
