Patrick Vieira has parted ways with French club Strasbourg just under a month before the Ligue 1 season commences, positioning him as a viable candidate to replace Gregg Berhalter as the U.S. national team coach.

The announcement, made by Strasbourg's parent company, Chelsea, stated that Vieira's departure was by mutual agreement. At the time of his exit, Vieira had completed just one year of a three-year contract. The new French league season is set to begin on August 16.

This development comes in the wake of Berhalter's dismissal last week, following the U.S. team's first-round exit in the Copa America. Vieira, aged 48, has an illustrious history in football, both as a player and a coach, including a World Cup win with France in 1998.
