Toyota's Kalle Rovanpera made history by winning the inaugural Rally Latvia in the event's world championship debut. The 23-year-old Finn led from start to finish on the Baltic nation's fast gravel roads, beating teammate Sebastien Ogier by 39.2 seconds. Estonian Ott Tanak secured third place for Hyundai.
Toyota's Kalle Rovanpera made a triumphant return to his roots by becoming the first winner of Rally Latvia on Sunday, marking the event's world championship debut.
The 23-year-old Finn, who began rallying competitively in Latvia at age 12, led from start to finish on the Baltic country's fast gravel roads, winning the season's eighth round. He defeated teammate and eight-time titleholder Sebastien Ogier by 39.2 seconds, both participating only part-time this season.
Estonian Ott Tanak, the 2019 world champion, finished third for Hyundai, trailing by an additional 25.3 seconds after passing local hero Martins Sesks on the final stage. Sesks, in just his second WRC rally, dropped to seventh due to a transmission problem with his M-Sport Ford Puma.
"It's been a great weekend," remarked Rovanpera. "Winning here for the first time is special. Latvia holds significant importance for me." Belgian Thierry Neuville finished eighth, maintaining his overall championship lead for Hyundai and staying eight points ahead of Tanak, who himself is five points ahead of Toyota's Elfyn Evans.
The next round takes place in Finland from August 1-4.
