Thrilling Waves Await at Teahupo'o for 2024 Olympics Surfing Event
The 2024 Olympic surfing event will take place in Teahupo'o, Tahiti, known for its challenging and perfect waves. Local heroes Vahine Fierro and Kauli Vaast, amongst other global top surfers, are set to compete in this iconic location. The event promises exciting action with a higher-than-normal swell forecast.
Most 2024 Olympians will compete in Paris, but elite surfers aim for gold 16,000km away on Tahiti's Teahupo'o island, featuring the impressive spinning blue barrels. Competition will be intense among surfing powerhouses, with host nation France posing a formidable challenge, especially after two Tahitian locals qualified to surf at their home break.
'Hosting the Olympics at Teahupo'o is ideal because it's such a good wave at that time of the year,' stated local Vahine Fierro, a Tahiti Pro winner. 'The Olympics are returning to surfing's roots.'
Surfing history dates back to the 12th century in French Polynesia but debuted in the Olympics in Tokyo, 2021. Teahupo'o's surf contest will starkly contrast Tokyo's event, characterized by heavy, hollow waves breaking over a coral reef, as noted by Peruvian Olympian Lucca Mesinas.
