Aitana Bonmati scored once and created another as Spain overcame Japan 2-1 in the opening Group C fixture of the Olympic women's soccer competition in Nantes. Bonmati equalized the score after Aoba Fujino's stunning free-kick gave Japan an early lead. Spain's Mariona Caldentey capitalized on Bonmati's assist to secure the win in the second half.

Olympic debutants Spain marked a significant turnaround, avenging their previous 4-0 World Cup loss to Japan. The first goal came in the 13th minute courtesy of Fujino's excellent free kick, barely touched by goalkeeper Cata Coll. Bonmati quickly responded, scoring thanks to Athenea del Castillo's pass, and Caldentey's 74th-minute strike ensured Spain topped the group.

In Group A, reigning Olympic champions Canada also performed a comeback, defeating New Zealand 2-1 in St Etienne. Later today, medal contenders Germany, Australia, Brazil, and the United States will begin their campaigns. Women's football in the Olympics is proving to be an exciting and competitive event.
