Shock Defeat: Szilagyi's Historic Streak Ends at 2024 Olympics

In an unexpected turn of events, Hungarian fencer Aron Szilagyi's bid for a fourth consecutive Olympic gold in men's individual saber ended abruptly. Szilagyi, a three-time champion, lost his opening match at the Paris 2024 Olympics to Canadian Fares Arfa, marking a significant upset in Olympic fencing history.

Shock Defeat: Szilagyi's Historic Streak Ends at 2024 Olympics

An era-defining winning streak in Olympic fencing concluded in a shocking upset Saturday as Hungarian fencer Aron Szilagyi fell in his opening bout, halting his quest for a fourth consecutive gold medal.

Szilagyi, the only male fencer to clinch three individual Olympic titles, dominated the men's individual saber event in 2012, 2016, and 2021. However, his historic streak was shattered in Paris, where he sought to make unprecedented Olympic history with a fourth title.

In a stunning reversal, the 27th-seeded Canadian Fares Arfa defeated Szilagyi 15-8 in the round of 32, delivering one of the most significant upsets of the 2024 Olympics. Arfa, a first-time Olympian, surged ahead with six unanswered points, and despite Szilagyi narrowing the gap to 6-4, the Hungarian couldn't catch up.

“I'm in a bit of shock right now, so I'm not even disappointed or angry at myself yet. It happened so fast, and I've never thought that my individual competition here in Paris would be so short,” Szilagyi remarked.

Reflecting on the bout, Szilagyi added, “It's really a shock. It's like my opponent read me. I was an open book to him. In every touch, what he wanted, it happened. All his parries worked, all his attacks landed.”

Szilagyi had been on a remarkable run of 15 wins in individual saber competition at the Olympics, untouched since his defeat by Keeth Smart (USA) in the round of 16 at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Meanwhile, Arfa, who won team gold with Canada at last year's Pan-American Games, had never fenced at the Olympics before.

“It was like as if he'd been the three-time Olympic champion, and I was some kind of first-time Olympian,” Szilagyi conceded.

Szilagyi's unexpected early exit wasn't the sole upset in fencing on Saturday. Eli Dershwitz from the USA, last year's men's saber world champion, was defeated 15-10 by Hungarian Csanad Gemesi. Additionally, defending Olympic champion in women's epee, Sun Yiwen, lost her opening bout 14-13 to Japan's Miho Yoshimura.
