Belgium's Remco Evenepoel clinched an Olympic gold medal to add to his world title by triumphing in the men's individual time trial at the Paris Games in a remarkable display on Saturday. The 24-year-old, who recently finished third overall in the Tour de France, clocked an astounding 36 minutes 12.16 seconds over a 32.4km distance in challenging rain conditions, defeating Italian Filippo Ganna by a margin of 14.92 seconds.

Fellow Belgian, Wout van Aert, secured the bronze medal. 'It means a lot. The Olympics occur every four years, so winning this time means I've ticked that box,' said an elated Evenepoel, who remains one of the top contenders for next weekend's road race.

'It's incredible to outpace these two cycling legends.' Britain's Josh Tarling suffered a setback due to an early puncture, finishing fourth, merely 2.16 seconds short of a podium finish.

Evenepoel's explosive start saw him leading the pack at both early checkpoints, showcasing his skill on the slick roads of Paris. The 2022 road race world champion navigated tricky corners with assurance and celebrated with raised fists as he crossed the finish line.

In contrast, Ganna's tactic of splitting his race pace nearly cost him as he narrowly avoided smashing into a barrier but finished strong. Asked about his performance, Ganna acknowledged Evenepoel's exceptional prowess, describing him as 'a machine.'

Initially leading the race, Van Aert fell just over 10 seconds behind Ganna despite an impressive early gap. 'Biking is my only talent, so I'm extremely proud tonight,' Van Aert remarked.

Both Evenepoel and Van Aert will join forces in a formidable quartet with Tiesj Benoot and Jasper Stuyven for next Saturday's road race, a 225-km challenge in and around Paris. 'It's an entirely different race with multiple strategies at play. We're a team of equals. Wout is in excellent shape, Tiesj is phenomenal, and Jasper excels in one-day races,' Evenepoel commented, highlighting the strength across competing teams.
