Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has pinpointed 'physical conditioning' as a key factor behind their 4-1 pre-season defeat to Celtic at Notre Dame Stadium. Despite fielding a near full-strength squad, Chelsea were outplayed and humbled by their Scottish counterparts.

The match began promisingly for Chelsea, who created three goal-scoring chances early on. However, Celtic quickly took control, scoring twice in the first half through Matt O'Riley and Kyogo Furuhashi.

The second half saw Chelsea attempting a comeback, but they fell further behind and conceded two more goals before the 80th minute. Christopher Nkunku netted a late consolation goal for Chelsea, concluding the match at 4-1. Post-game, Maresca emphasized improvements both on and off the ball, and pointed out the importance of adapting to new gameplay strategies. Maresca acknowledged that Celtic's advanced pre-season schedule gave them a physical edge and hinted at progress in Chelsea's performance since their game against Wrexham. Chelsea will next face Club America at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Wednesday.
